Austin Vawter is a sophomore at the University of Iowa as a music performance major studying with Volkan Orhon. He started playing the bass in 6th grade and bought his own bass in 9th grade when he started taking lessons with John Hall. Austin has participated in many honor orchestras in high school. These include the Iowa All-State orchestra where he earned principal bass during his sophomore and senior years, NIESTA for four years; three as principal bass, Metropolitan Honor Orchestra for four years; two years principal bass; and ISTA for three years as principal bass. In addition to orchestras Austin has received a Division I rating each year for both city and state solo contests and won the Best-in-Center award three times. After his junior year, Austin went to Interlochen Arts camp where he studied with Larry Hurst and Jack Budrow for six weeks. He then won a section bass position with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony in the beginning of his senior year. Now that Austin is in college he has been subbing with many symphonies hopes to continue playing with orchestras and keep working at his goal to eventually be a member of an ICSOM orchestra.
